The Venus of Pekárna

The Pekárna cave is a freely accessible cave in the Moravian Karst, situated near the village of Ochoz u Brna.

The Venus of Pekárna is a Venus figurine made in the style typical of the Magdalenian period, which means that it is depicted sideways. It is about 15,000 years old, 4.6 cm high, and is made of mammoth ivory. Were Magdalenian female engravings not known, it might not be obvious that this is a Venus figurine.

The Magdalenian people came to Central Europe from the west, from the Atlantic Ocean, where they survived the Last Glacial Maximum.

A suitable starting point is a place called Hádek where the Údolí Říčky ("Valley of the Small River") nature trail begins. It leads around the Hádecký rybník (Hádecký Pond) and the Ochozská Cave (now closed to the public) to the Pekárna Cave. There is a refreshment kiosk at the Hádecký Pond.
