Pictorial Guide: Galgenberg, Austria
The Venus of Galgenberg
Galgenberg is a hill in Austria, located about 5 km to the north of the town of Krems an der Donau, above the village of Stratzing. The Venus figurine was found to the east of the Galgenberg peak. An educational tourist trail "Through the Ice Age" (Eiszeitwanderweg) leads through the place of discovery and its immediate surroundings.
The Venus figurine (the original) is permanently on display in Vienna, in the Naturhistorisches Museum. The original Venus of Willendorf can also be seen in the same museum.
The Venus of Galgenberg is nicknamed "Fanny" after her posture that resembles the posture of the dancer Fanny Elssler (1810-1884).
The Venus figurine is made of hornblende schist. It is 7.2 cm tall, and is estimated to be 36,000 years old. It is the second oldest known Venus figurine (after the Venus of Hohle Fels from Germany).
It was found in a fireplace, embedded in a thick layer of charcoal.
